BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) – Mike Daum scored 24 points and had 12 rebounds to lead South Dakota State over Division II Wayne State 80-72 on Wednesday night.
Daum was 7 of 12 from the floor and made 9 of 11 free throws. Skyler Flatten added 15 points for South Dakota State (1-2).
Jordan Cornelius and Matt Thomas each scored 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting for Wayne State. Kendall Jacks had nine points, and Vance Janssen added seven points and five assists.
Wayne State had a 37-33 halftime lead, and it was tied 50-50 with 10:42 remaining. The Jackrabbits had a 20-10 run and led 70-60 with 4:22 to play. Chris Howell scored all seven of his points during the stretch.
It was South Dakota State coach T.J. Otzelberger’s first win with the program. Otzelberger was an assistant coach at Iowa State last season.

Since we are in-between sports seasons now, ‘Sportsmax’ will air in place of Coaches Corner for the next two Saturday’s. After a “bye week” last Thursday, Chris and Casey Hutmacher will be back with another edition of the Sports Zone tomorrow afternoon on 93.7FM! The guys will break down this week in the National Football League and make their picks for each game. Remember at the end of the show the guys will be giving away a Bug Light prize package to one lucky caller! The show will start at 1:45 on Magic 93!
The Nebraska Cornhuskers will look for their second consecutive win this Saturday when they host Maryland. Kickoff time is at 11am central. The Terps are 5-5 overall and have lost their last three in a row as they look to become bowl eligible. Meanwhile, the Huskers are 8-2 and look to stay alive in the race to play for the Big Ten Championship next month. Nebraska sits in second place in the West Division of the Conference behind Wisconsin, who beat Nebraska three weeks ago in overtime. Pre-game coverage will start at 10:10 this Saturday on Country 1260.
We want to say best of luck to Shane Stiehl and Brett Logue this week in the BASS Nation Championship that will take place November 17th through the 19th on Lake Conroe near Houston, Texas! Shane is a member of the Winner Borderline Bassmasters and Brett is with the Bon Homme Bass Club. The two are representing South Dakota at this week’s Championship event. The top three out of the 113 angler field will earn a spot in the Geico Bassmaster Classic that will be held March 24th through the 26th on Lake Conroe. Good luck guys!

It is State Volleyball week in South Dakota! The Class ‘A’ Tournament will be held in Watertown, the Class ‘B’ Tournament will happen in Huron while the ‘AA’ Tournament will be held in Brookings. The tournaments will run Thursday through Saturday. The top overall seed in the Class ‘A’ field is Dakota Valley, who was victorious over Winner in the Sweet 16 round. In Class ‘B’, Northwestern is the one seed. We have two local teams that will be competing in Huron- Lyman and Platte/Geddes. Lyman is the six seed and will play three seeded Chester Area at 6pm on Thursday night. Platte-Geddes is the seven seed and will play two seeded Sully Buttes after the Lyman game wraps up.
