Twins split squad goes 2-0 Tuesday

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) – Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Jerad Eickhoff threw four innings in a 7-5 loss to a Minnesota Twins’ split squad on Tuesday. Eickhoff entered spring training behind schedule after sustaining a small fracture in his right thumb last month during a bunting drill. He allowed three runs and four hits, struck out seven and walked two.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) – Joe Mauer hit a two-run drive that sent a split squad of Minnesota Twins past the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 Tuesday. Mauer connected in the first inning for an opposite-field shot to left. Trevor Plouffe added a two-run homer in the fifth for the Twins. Caleb Joseph had two of the Orioles’ four hits.

WGPC All-Conference Team revealed

The Western Great Plains All-Conference Boys Basketball Team was released yesterday. Locally, making first team all-conference were Justice Morrison, Dru Espinoza and Nicholas Young all of White River. Making second team all-conference was Lyman’s Kalvin Peterson, along with Russell Leader Charge of White River. Gunner Piper and Lucas Iron Heart of White River were named to third team all-conference.

Lady Jacks fall to Stanford by one

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) – Lili Thompson made a go-ahead three-point play with 8.2 seconds left and Erica McCall delivered a big block moments later, lifting No. 4 seed Stanford into its ninth straight Sweet 16 with a 66-65 comeback win against 12th-seeded South Dakota State on Monday night.

McCall swatted Macy Miller’s shot in the key with 1 second left to seal it. Thompson, who missed a 3-point try with 18 seconds to go, made a driving layup with 8.2 seconds left and converted the free throw as the Cardinal erased a five-point deficit over the final 3 minutes.

Briana Roberson hit a 3-pointer with 1:11 left that pulled Stanford within 64-63.

What a finish for Tara VanDerveer’s team in the 1,000th game at Stanford for the Hall of Fame coach.

The Cardinal (26-7) will face Notre Dame on Friday in the Lexington Regional.

A couple of reminders for the week

The Kiwanis Aktion Club will be having an Easter egg hunt this Wednesday at the City Park in Oacoma. Registration will start at 5pm. In case of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Oacoma Community Center. Also, the Chamberlain School District will hold their annual kindergarten roundup this Thursday from 9am-6pm in the lower level of the elementary. To make an appointment call Chantelle at 234-4460.

East/West Shootout set for tonight in Gregory!

The Gregory Athletics Club will hold the annual East/West Shootout tonight at the Gregory Auditorium! It will start at 6:30 with the girls game taking place first. a three point shootout will happen after the girls game goes final followed by the boys game. Come see our area senior basketball players take the court for the annual event!

 

Lady Jacks ready to battle Stanford tonight

The twelve seeded South Dakota State Lady Jackrabbits will be back in action tonight as they try and knock off four seeded Stanford. Tipoff time at Maples Pavilion is 8pm central. The Lady Jacks were able to take down five seeded Miami of Florida on Saturday, 74-71.  If South Dakota State were to win tonight, they would advance to the sweet 16.
