A suicide prevention mini conference and screening of the documentary film “My Ascension” will be held at the Valentine High School on Monday, September 23rd. The first session will begin at 5:30pm. The screening will be at 7pm, and then at 8pm, there will be a question-and-answer session with Emma Benoit, the film producer and suicide prevention experts and advocates.

A Financial Aid Night will take place on Wednesday, September 25th at 6pm in the Gregory School. This night is mainly for seniors and their parents but juniors are welcome to attend. This night will consist of the process and how to apply for financial aid for post secondary education.

The 18th annual Iona Cowboy Poker Run will happen this Saturday, September 21st. Signup will start at 11am. All forms of transportation are welcome. A free will donation meal will start at 5:30pm.

Hay Daze will take place this Saturday in Platte! There will be all kinds of activities that will be happening for the kids, including hay rides, bingo and more. There will also be live music played, along with a chili cook-off, street dance, downtown wine talk, food trucks and more. The event is being sponsored by the Platte Area Chamber of Commerce.

Rosebud Electric Cooperative will hold their annual membership meeting tonight at the Gregory Auditorium starting at 7:30pm. There will be an election of three directors, along with the business meeting, entertainment, door prizes and refreshments. All members are encouraged to attend tonight.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety Facebook page, at 2:45pm on Friday, Firefighters have been successful in containing a majority of the fire.  One remaining area actively burning right now is along the eastern edge of the fire near the White River.  The location is west of highway 83 and a long way from reaching it.  Winds are shifting which could drive the fire more to the east.  Single engine air tankers are dropping retardant in that area to discourage the fire from spreading in that direction.  Conditions are still favorable for wild land fires in the central and western parts of the state.  Do not burn outdoors or do anything that may cause a spark, and do your part to keep South Dakota safe.

AS A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE, THE TOWN OF OKATON WAS EVACUATED LATE LAST NIGHT, ALONG WITH SEVERAL RANCHES SOUTH OF THE WHITE RIVER. MELLETTE COUNTY SHERIFF LAFE GILDEMASTER SAID BASED ON WHAT HE IS SEEING, RESULTS ARE PROMISING IN MELLETTE COUNTY’S PORTION OF THE FIRE. SHERIFF GILDEMASTER CONTINUES TO ASK THAT EVEN IF THE FIRE DOES LESSEN IN ACTIVITY TODAY, THAT PEOPLE STILL AVOID THE AREA, AND LET THE FIRE PERSONNEL FINISH DOING WHAT THEY NEED TO DO WITHOUT THE DISTRACTIONS OF EXTRA TRAFFIC. CHERRY TODD ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE POSTED ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE THAT THEY HAD POLES BURN UP IN THE FIRE, AND THAT THE FAR NORTHWEST CORNER OF CHERRY-TODD SERVICE AREA WILL BE WITHOUT POWER FOR A PORTION OF THE DAY TODAY.
