A good portion of Central South Dakota received rain on Tuesday night. Stan Bicek, 10 miles south of Colome, said he had 85/100’s fall. Pete Haukaas in Okreek said he got 48/100’s. Fred Weidner at Dog Ear Lake had 60/100’s. Eugene Reuer in Herrick had an inch and a half of rain! Short Haley said he received 75/100’s Tuesday night in Colome and 27/100’s at Haley’s Hiway Lumber. Ben Huber in White River received 20/100’s. Dennis Hansen said .64 fell at Carlock. The Larsen’s in Chamberlain said an inch and 30/100’s fell last night and the Swansons, 1.25 miles east of Clearfield received half an inch.

Butte and Burke to hold blood drives next week
Keep in mind that a blood drive will take place in Butte, Nebraska on Tuesday, August 22nd from 2-5:45pm at the Butte Community Center. If you would like to make an appointment you can call Phyllis at 402-832-5777. Another blood drive will happen at the Burke Civic Center on Wednesday, August 23rd running from Noon to 5pm. Middle School Orientation to happen tomorrow
Don’t forget that Winner Schools will be holding Middle School Orientation for grades 6-8 on Thursday, August 17th beginning at 6pm tomorrow in the Armory. Students will receive schedules and other information during the meetings. If you have questions you can call the office at 605-842-8125. Winner’s first day of school is Thursday, August 24th as all classes will begin at 8am and go until 3:30pm.
Bowling and Dart news
Gregory Lanes will be holding a league bowling organizational meeting next Tuesday, August 22nd beginning at 7:30pm. Pizza and beverages will be enjoyed by those who attend! A dart meeting for Gregory and Burke area shooters will take place on Wednesday, September 6th at Bill’s Bar on Main Street in Burke. For further information call 835-8131.
Gorillas and Cougars to open up seasons on Friday
The defending 9AA state champion Gregory Gorillas will open up the season against Kimball/White Lake on the road in Kimball. Talking with Coach Allmendinger earlier in the week he said Kimball/White Lake presents challenges on both sides of the ball, especially on the line of scrimmage. Kickoff will be at 7pm. KWYR will see the Gorillas next week as they will play at Parkston. Mike Sebern’s Burke/South Central Cougars will play on their home field in Bonesteel Friday night to open the season as they play Scotland. Mike talked earlier in the week about the good football tradition that the Highlanders have and that they always seem to make some noise come postseason time. Kickoff in Bonesteel Friday night will be at 7pm.
Classes start at St. Mary's Hall tonight
Just a reminder that Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University classes will be offered at St. Mary’s Hall in Winner beginning tonight. The classes will be two hours long once a week and will go for nine weeks. If you happen to have any questions in regards to the classes feel free to give Tom a call at 605-519-8009.
Health Supplies Drive running through Friday
Community Connections in Winner is holding a “off to a healthy start” health supplies drive for local schools now through Friday, August 18th. Donations of tissues, hand sanitizers, cleaning wipes etc. can be dropped off at the donation boxes located at Winner Sooper Foods, Winner Food Center, Dollar General, Family Dollar or at Shopko. Help the kids get off to school on a healthy start!
Big golf tournaments coming up this weekend
We have some big golf tournaments coming up Saturday and Sunday in the area. The Ron Waller Member Guest Tournament will happen this Saturday and Sunday at the Winner Country Club. Saturday, the Sandhills Iron Horse Riders 3 person scramble will be held in Ainsworth. The West Central Electric Tournament will also happen Saturday in Murdo. Sunday, the One-Eye Open Tournament will take place in Murdo too.
Preseason Prep Media Football Poll
The preseason South Dakota Prep Media Football Poll was released last night. The top ranked team in 11AAA is Sioux Falls Washington. In 11AA, Harrisburg is the top ranked team. In 11A, Madison is the top ranked team. In 11B, two time defending state champion Winner is the top ranked squad while Chamberlain is in fifth. In 9AA, defending state champion Gregory is ranked first while Kimball/White Lake is receiving votes. In 9A, Warner and Canistota/Freeman are tied atop the poll. In Class 9B, Colman-Egan is ranked first while Colome is ranked second as they received 11 first place votes.
Angels win second straight championship
The Alexandria Angels won their second consecutive state b amateur championship on Sunday as they were able to shutout Larchwood, 4-0 at Cadwell Park. Pitchers Trevor Vermeulen and Tyson Gau were named co MVP’s of the tournament. Gau, who picked up the win on the mound Sunday afternoon, helped his own cause as he launched a homerun in the third inning for Alexandria, who have won three of the last five state b championships.Winner/Colome’s Austin Richey won the batting title as he hit .600 in the tournament batting 9 for 15. Garretson won the sportsmanship award.
