Coverage from Centerville and Warrior Field this Friday!

The high school football season will get kicked off for a good number of our area teams this Friday night! Chris Doski and Dan Cahoy will be in the booth in Centerville Friday when the defending state 9B champion Colome Cowboys take on the Tornadoes. Pre-game coverage will start at around 6:30 on Magic 93. On Country 1260AM Friday night, Scott Schramm and Brett Gardner will have the call from Warrior Field when the two time defending state 11B champion Winner Warriors take on Sioux Falls Christian. Pre-game to start at around 6:30.

Reminders for the week

Don’t forget that it is Patient Appreciation Celebration week at the Mission Community Health Center through August 18th! The celebration is part of National Health Center Week. Stop by and take part in refreshments, a coloring contest and door prizes! Tuesday, the Burke VFW and Auxillary will meet at the Post Home. Dinner will be served at 7 with meetings to follow. The Digital Projector fund drive is still ongoing in Gregory. You can send a donation to P.O. Box, 348, Gregory, South Dakota, 57533.

Outdoor Youth Day to happen this weekend in Winner

The Pheasants Forever Chapter #99 will hold a youth outdoor day this Saturday, August 19th beginning with signups at 8:30am at the Rosebud Arrow, Rod and Gun Club in Winner. The event will run from 9am to 1pm and is free to kids ages five to sixteen. You must pre-register by the end of today. Applications are available at the Winner Area Chamber Office, Bankwest and at Farmers Union Insurance. For details call Mike at 840-9992 or Tim at 830-0220.

Orientation to happen in Winner this week

Winner High School Orientation will be held on Tuesday, August 15th at 6pm in the Winner Armory for students entering grades 9-12. Parents must accompany a student to complete paperwork so they can be allowed to pickup a computer and take home. Middle School Orientation for grades 6-8 will take place on Thursday, August 17th at 6pm in the Armory. Students will receive schedules and other information during the meetings. If you have questions you can call the office at 842-8125.

State Amateur Baseball from Saturday

The stage is set for today’s State B Amateur Baseball Championship game after the Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning semifinal games at Cadwell Park. In game one, Larchwood rallied late to beat Garretson, 3-2. In game two, the Alexandria Angels won 1-0 over Harrisburg. Cole Wenande’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning was the difference in the game. At 2pm today, Alexandria will look for another state title as they battle Larchwood at Cadwell Park.

Rain and Hail reports from Saturday

Saturday featured plenty of rain along with hail and flood damage in Central South Dakota. Brett Heath, three miles west of Colome on Highway 18, said he received 3.40. Pam Mayes, five miles west of Ideal, called in two and a half inches of rain, Craig Wagner told us he had anywhere from an inch and a half to two and a half inches of rain fall last night with marble size hail seven miles southeast of Winner. Tresh Swedlund, 9 miles west and 9 miles north of town reported 3.20. Randy Vandenhoek in Winner reported 3.5 inches. Short Haley in Colome had an inch 90 fall Saturday. There was a report of 2.5 inches eleven miles south of Winner. At the Cole and Lacey Shippy Residence, seven miles south of Colome, they had golf ball size hail fall. Ashley Augspurger in Winner reported 95/100s on Saturday. The Winner Bakery had water leak in and flooded shop. The bakery will be closed on Monday. Fred Weidner at Dog Ear Lake had an inch and a half of rain. The Winner Country Club Golf Tournament for Sunday has been cancelled and will be closed until Monday. 5 miles south of Winner, Ed Watzel had an inch 70 with golf ball size hail. Melvin Orel, east of the Dollar General in Winner, had 4.70 fall on Saturday. Sharon Eddie on west second in Winner had 3.85. Joann Schilling said she had  4.85. 4 miles east of Winner, Michelle Parvin said she had 3.70 and the Bartels, northwest of Winner, said they had anywhere from 4 and a half to 5 and a  half inches of rain Saturday.

The quarterfinal round of the state b amateur baseball tournament wrapped up last night at Cadwell Park in Mitchell. In game one, Harrisburg shut down the Crofton lineup as the Woodies were victorious, 3-1. Dalton Allen was the winning pitcher as he went eight innings, struck out six and allowed just three hits. Ryan Menssen led the offensive charge for Harrisburg at the plate as he went three for four. Game two Friday was won by Alexandria as they exploded for eight runs in the fourth inning to pull away and beat Madison, 12-2. Tyson Gau drove in three runs for the Angels and Jordan Gau and Peyton Smith each drove in a pair. In the semis today at 1pm, Garretson will play Larchwood. At 7:30 tonight, Alexandria will take on Harrisburg. In other sports news from last night, the Winner Lady Warrior Basketball team held their fundraising golf tournament. Winning the tournament was the team of Anthony Husher and Drew DeMers as they shot a 30.

Friday reminders

Don’t forget that the final movie of the season begins showing tonight at the Winner Drive Inn Theatre as they will have “The Emoji Movie” on the big screen. The show is rated PG and the movie will start at dark Friday through Monday. Tonight, the Winner Lady Warrior Basketball team will hold their fifth annual fundraising tournament at the Winner Country Club starting at 6pm. It will be a two person scramble format and there is a sixty dollar entry fee. Geddes Fur Trader Days get underway this evening and run through Sunday! Tonight, there will be a NRBT Bull Riding event going on at the athletic complex in Geddes.

News for next week

Coming up next week, a patient appreciation  celebration will take place August 14th through the 18th at the Mission Community Health Center, as part of National Health Center Week. Take part all week long as you can enjoy refreshments, coloring contest and door prizes. On Friday, August 18th, the Brule County Relay for Life will be held at the Chamberlain Community Center. That event will run from 6 to 10pm.
