Region Teener Baseball starts tomorrow in Corsica!

Teener Regional Baseball will get underway Tuesday in Corsica as three games will take place. Starting at 2:30pm, Colome will take on Platte. At 5pm, Gregory will face off against Corsica followed by the winner of game one taking on Tabor at around 7:30. If Gregory were to win the tournament this week then the runner up would also make the state tournament since Gregory is this years host of the state b tournament.

Winner Color Run to happen Saturday!

Winner FFA will hold a color run this Saturday, July 29th. It will feature a 5k and 10k run with check-in at 7:45am at the red barn west of Frontier Motors. The race will start at 8am. Proceeds from the race will go to Sylvia Bear, who recently lost her home to a fire. For more information you can contact Wyatt Dejong via email at wyatt.dejong@k12.sd.us.

Veterans Stand Down in Gregory today

There will be a veterans stand down at the Gregory Lanes parking lot this morning. It will go from 10am-2pm. All armed service veterans and their families are welcome. Please bring a copy of DD214, dependent information and identification. Services provided will be food, clothing, VA benefit, housing referrals, employment services, legal assistance, counseling and plenty more.

Four more games took place Saturday at the State B Legion Baseball Tournament in Winner. In game one, Platte/Geddes eliminated Groton as they were victorious, 12-4. Game two, Miner/McCook beat Milbank 6-1 in the other elimination contest. Last night, Vermillion beat Dell Rapids in nine innings, 3-2 on a walk-off steal of home! In game four, Spearfish beat Winner/Colome in six innings, 10-0. At the District 3 Amateur Tournament in Miller, Kimball/White Lake beat South Central in seven innings, 15-4. Game two saw Miller/Wessington defeat Chamberlain, 6-1.

Day one of the State B Legion Baseball Tournament was held Friday at Leahy Bowl. In game one, Vermillion beat Groton, 13-2. Game two saw Spearfish defeat Milbank, 4-1. In game three last night, Dell Rapids defeated Platte/Geddes in ten innings, 6-4. The nightcap was won by Winner/Colome as they took down Miner/McCook, 5-3. At the State B Junior Teener Tournament Friday in Baltic, Tyndall shutout Hamlin, 3-0. Canova beat Kimball/White Lake 15-5. Platte/Geddes won game three over Parkston, 8-3 and game four went to Baltic as they outscored Groton, 15-12. The Sunshine League Postseason Amateur Tournament continued last night at the Pond in Parkston. Parkston shutout Mt. Vernon, 1-0 and Dimock/Emery defeated Corsica/Stickney, 12-2.

Friday morning rain reports

Parts of Central South Dakota and Nebraska have seen some rain fall Thursday night into Friday morning! Val and Wade Ewing who live 27 miles southwest of Winner said they received 2 and a quarters inch of rain with windy conditions. Jayne Novotny of Joseph Angus who is 16 miles south of Carter received an inch 10 with a lot of wind. Twelve miles southwest of Winner, Liz Farley said she came away with an inch 55. Cleo Watzel received 80/100’s down Beaulieu Road. Cheryl Schroeder in Winner recieved just .05. Dennis Hansen at Carlock called in an amount of .14. Jim and Victoria Bowling, 11 miles south of Winner had 60/100’s of rain fall. Short Haley said he received .12 at the lumber yard and .85 at his house west of Colome. Fred Weidner at Dog Ear Lake called in 17/100’s. Monty Hopkins, 16 miles southwest of Winner called in an inch twenty. Pete Haukaas in Okreek received 83/100’s and Donna Howland in Winner had .25.

A few weekend reminders

Don’t forget to checkout Stella’s Food and Spirits in Burke tonight as Billy Lurken will be providing entertainment on the patio from 7 to 11pm! Also for this weekend, the Sandhills Piecemakers Quilt Guild will be at the Catholic Parish Hall in Valentine from 10am-4pm Friday and Saturday. There will be a trunk show on Saturday by Mary Lou Kerr beginning at 1:30pm. Today is the final day that nutritious summer meals will be served at the Gregory School Lunch Room from 11:30am-1pm. Kids eat for free and adults ages 19 and up eat for five dollars.

Highway and Main Street news

The Lyman County Highway Department reminds everyone about a road closure to through traffic on County Road 25 and 232nd street northwest of Presho for the Nies Bridge replacement. It will remain closed through August 16th. In other news, the City of Winner will be hosting a public meeting on July 31st at 5pm at the Council Chambers. The meeting is regarding Main Street continuing as a one way or changing it to a two way street when the state DOT will be redoing the highway through Winner in 2020.
