2020 South Dakota Election Results

Election Day took place throughout South Dakota yesterday. Here are the results from yesterday’s election.

In the statewide race for United States Senator between Republican Mike Rounds and Democrat Dan Ahlers, Mike Rounds defeated Dan Ahlers.

For U.S. Representative, in the race between Republican Dusty Johnson and Libertarian Randy ‘Uriah’ Luallin, Dusty Johnson defeated Randy “Uriah” Luallin.

On the State District Level, for South Dakota State Representative for District 21 in the race between Republican Rocky Blare, Republican Caleb Finck, and Democrat Jessica Hegge, Rocky Blare and Caleb Fink won both seats with 44 percent and 35 percent of total votes respectively.

For State Senator for District 21 in the race between Republican Erin Tobin and Democrat Dan Kerner Andersson, Erin Tobin defeated Dan Kerner Andersson with 79 percent of total votes.

For State Senator for District 26 in the race between Democrat Troy Heinert and Republican Joel Koskan, Troy Heinert defeated Joel Koskan with 53 percent of total votes.

For Public Utilities Commissioner, in the race between Republican Gary Hanson, Libertarian Devin Saxon and Democrat Remi W. B. Bald Eagle, Gary Hanson won the position.

For South Dakota State Representative for District 26B, in the race between Republican Rebecca L. Reimer and Democrat Tim Feliciano, Rebecca L. Reimer defeated Tim Feliciano with 70 percent of total votes.

On the local county level in the race for Tripp County District 2 Commissioner between Republican Daniel Forgey and Independent Marla Liggett, Daniel Forgey defeated Marla Liggett with 61 percent of total votes.

For Gregory County Commissioner in District 2, in the race between Democrat Kelsea Kenzy Sutton, Independent Nichole Matucha and Republican Lance Matucha, Lance Matucha won the position with 51 percent of total votes.

For Lyman County for County Commissioner, in the race between Republican Brian Kraus, Republican Leslie Reuer and Independent Kevin Thomas. Leslie Reuer with 37 percent of total votes and Brian Kraus with 35 percent of total votes won the two positions.

For Jones County in the race for States Attorney between Independent Diana Boni and Independent Kirby Krogman, Kirby Krogman defeated Diana Boni with 69 percent of total votes.

For Mellette County, in the race for County Commissioner District 2 between Republican Joyce M. Glynn, Independent Casey G. Krogman, and Independent Newlly O’Brien, Casey G. Krogman won the position with 42 percent of of total votes.

Initiated measure 26- an initiated measure to legalize marijuana for medical use, passed.

Amendment A passed legalizing the possession, use, transport and distribution of marijuana and paraphernalia by anyone who is 21 years old and older.

Gregory Chamber Christmas Promotion Drawing

The Gregory Christmas Promotion Drawing will take place starting Wednesday, November 25th at 11:30 a.m.  Each time one makes a purchase of $5 or more at a Chamber business, they need to write their name and phone number on the back of the receipt. Drop it in the Bucket at the Chamber office and be registered to win $100 in Chamber Bucks to be given away on November 25th, December 2nd, 9th, 16th and 23rd. If one is in attendance for the drawing and their name is drawn, they will win an additional $50.

Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations Training to be Held December 2

An environmental training session for operators of Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs), will be held Wednesday, December 2 in Huron at the Crossroads Convention Center.
Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the program following at 8:50 a.m. and concluding at approximately 4:45 p.m.
Specialists from SDSU Extension, the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Natural Resources Conservation Service are offering the training.
“Past attendees of this program have come away with at least one new practice they consider adopting related to land application, livestock feeding, air quality or soil conservation,” said Bob Thaler, Professor & SDSU Extension Swine Specialist.
Training is required for permit holders
In spring 2017, the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources reissued the General Water Pollution Control Permit for CAFOs. The new permit requires existing permitted operations to obtain coverage under the proposed permit one to four years after the general permit is issued.
One of the proposed permit conditions for existing permitted operations is that an onsite representative attends an approved environmental training program within the last three years prior to obtaining a new permit. Additionally, if the person who attended training no longer works at the operation, another representative must attend training within one year.
This current training program meets the training requirement of the proposed permit as long as it is attended within three years of obtaining coverage under the new permit.
Manure applicators, producers and any other interested individuals who are not currently applying for a permit can also benefit from the information and are encouraged to attend. Certified crop advisor credits are available as well.

Governor Noem Announces K-12 Connect

Governor Kristi Noem announced the launch of K-12 Connect, a program to provide internet service at no cost to eligible K-12 students in their homes for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year.

“Given the unprecedented disruption for many of our K-12 students, we want to make sure there isn’t a gap in learning this year,” said Governor Noem. “So many South Dakotans are stepping up to help, and I want to thank the South Dakota telecommunications companies that are teaming up with us to make this access possible.”

Eligible households will receive a letter this week indicating eligibility and identifying a telecommunications company to call to access free internet service through K-12 Connect. To enroll, eligible households must call the telecommunications company noted in their letter to set up service. Providers will install the necessary equipment on a first-come, first-serve basis. Internet service will be provided through June 30, 2021. After that time, the household must return the equipment to the provider or continue services at the household’s expense.

Households must meet all of the following:

  1. Have at least one student currently enrolled in an accredited South Dakota K-12 school;
  2. Must meet the income eligibility guidelines for the free and reduced school lunch program; and
  3. The household was not subscribed to a fixed broadband internet service as of July 1, 2020.

Enrollment closes Nov. 20, 2020.

K-12 Connect is a partnership of the South Dakota Governor’s Office, Bureau of Information and Telecommunications, Department of Education, and participating telecommunications companies. Funding for the program is from the CARES Act.

South Dakota State University to Host Fourth Annual SDSU Swine Day

This year’s SDSU Swine Day will be held at Wilbert Square Event Center (931 25th Ave.) in Brookings, on Nov. 3, beginning at 9 a.m. CST. Topics that will be covered include current and completed swine research in production, nutrition and reproduction.
Angie Krieger, Vice President of Domestic Marketing for the National Pork Board, will serve as the keynote speaker. She is responsible for building relationships with all segments of the pork packing and processing community in order to ensure National Pork Board’s product marketing, issues management, education and research initiatives are aligned with packer and processor priorities.
Lunch will be served after listening to an update on the SDSU Meat Lab from Dr. Keith Underwood, Associate Professor of Animal Science. In the afternoon, SDSU swine faculty and graduate students will share highlights from their research programs. Graduate students presenting include Yesid (Ricardo) Garavito Duarte, Christian Ramirez-Camba, Talia Everding, Analicia Swanson, David Clizer and Hannah Miller. Some updates and information on the South Dakota Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (ADRDL) will be provided by Dr. Jane Christopher-Hennings, Director of the SD ADRDL. Dr. Ben Hause, SDSU Assistant Professor of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, will speak about “Swine Diagnostics and Research”.
Due to the COVID-19, attendance is limited to 100 participants. SDSU asks that attendants please adhere to any notifications throughout the building, maintain appropriate social distancing and respect the additional precautions to allow collaborations and connections, such as these events, to continue to take place safely and responsibly. Face coverings will be worn when in public spaces with the exception of during meals.

Valentine and Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuges Initiate Construction Projects to Enhance Public Access

This fall and winter, construction projects will begin at two Nebraska national wildlife refuges to enhance public access, visitor experience and visitor safety. At Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) will add gravel and recondition the existing roadway surface of the Little Hay Wildlife Drive. At Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge, the Service will renovate the Fort Falls Trail trailhead and parking area. The projects will result in temporary closures of the affected roads and trails at the refuges.

 The Little Hay Wildlife Drive is a 10-mile auto tour route at Valentine National Wildlife Refuge that allows visitors to learn about refuge management, wetland conservation, wildlife and plants. The road is a primary travel route used to facilitate hunting, fishing, wildlife observation, wildlife photography, environmental education and wildlife interpretation.

However, the road has become very rough due to insufficient gravel and may pose a safety hazard to visitors as large rocks and sharp edges have become exposed. There will be significant construction traffic on the Little Hay Wildlife Drive beginning approximately Oct. 27, through the end of November. Sections of the wildlife drive will be closed throughout the duration of the project.  Please consult the refuge website, www.fws.gov/refuge/valentine/, and refuge kiosks for updated information on closures.

The Fort Falls Trail at Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge is a strenuous, roughly one-mile nature trail that descends from the trailhead parking lot, through a wilderness area and to the base of Fort Falls, then continues to the river before circling back to the trailhead via the top of the canyon rim.  The existing facility consists of a gravel and concrete parking area and an asphalt sidewalk.

The Service will rehabilitate the existing trailhead and parking facility to improve safety, parking and the overall visitor experience. The Fort Falls trailhead and parking area will be closed for the duration of the project, which is expected to begin in late October and continue through mid-December. Visitors should access the Fort Falls trail and waterfall via the Bur Oak parking area. Please consult the refuge website, www.fws.gov/refuge/fort_niobrara/, and on-site kiosks for updated maps and information on closures.
